Former MP Ananda Dassanayake has passed away

Mr. Ananda Dassanayake, a former Trade Union Leader and a Senior Assistant Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party passed away at his Gampola Sinhapitiya residence in Sinhapitiya, Gampola on 9th.  He was 93 years of age.
Mr. Dassanayake has served the nation as a Senator, a Parliamentarian and a Governor of the Uva and Southern provinces.
He was appointed to the senate in 1950 and later elected to Parliament in 1970 to represent the Kotmale electorate. He remained an MP for 17 years. Mr. Dassanayake was one of the 8 SLFP MPs elected to Parliament in the 1977 General Election.
Mr. Dassanayake served as the Governor of the Uva Province from January 1995 to 1999, and from 1999 to 31st January, 2002 served as the Governor of the Southern Province.
He functioned as the President of the Sri Lanka Independent Trade Union for several years before entering Parliament.He is an alumnus of the University of Peradeniya, and began his carrier as a teacher. He was a close associate of the late Mr. D. A. Rajapaksa.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa paid a visit him recently when he was receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Kandy General Hospital. Mr. Dassanayake was a father of six including the Central Provincial Council Member Kumara Dassanayaka.
His wife Nanda predeceased him.
His remains lie at his residence No. 90 Sinhapitiya, Gampola. Cremation will take place on Saturday. (niz)
